Estadio! A taste of Spain

Estadio DC

The hubby and I happened upon this gem of a restaurant by accident.  We couldn’t get a table at Barcelona, one of the newer “IT” spots in DC serving authentic Spanish cuisine, so we decided to just walk the Logan Circle area and take our chances by going into the next restaurant that caught our eye.  And 2 blocks down we found Estadio.  The first thing that caught my eye was the beautiful old world style Spanish door.  (I have a thing for beautiful doors).  When you enter the restaurant you get a laid back earthy vibe.  The wait was 45 minutes but the Sangria’s offered by the bar make the wait bearable. Very refreshing!!!  Shortly after entering, the hostess advises us that she can seat us immediately if we don’t mind sitting over the kitchen.  At first I objected as it was date night and I wanted a quiet sexy moment with my husband.  But hunger won out and we agreed.  And what a great decision that was!!! It allowed me to put a visual with the menu titles, which was very helpful, as I wanted to step out of my usual comfort zone.

We started with Montaditos (small sandwich).  We chose the Grilled country bread, tomato and olive oil simply because I wanted bread.  However we found out later that bread is served to you, so we could have skipped that step.  We followed up with a family favorite: MUSSELS in a garlic and white wine sauce.  These were the best mussels we’ve had in a while.  They were large, juicy and cooked just right.  And they were plentiful.  Now that was good but let’s move on to the sinful part of the meal:  the entrees.    I was initially going to go with my tried and true- scallops but then I saw this dish in the kitchen that spoke to me.  It said, “Kyani, you must eat me. Forget everything else and put me in your mouth”.  It was the braised bacon, brussels sprouts, and butternut squash puree.  My husband ordered the braised short ribs with mashed potato and scallops with cauli flower.  As we were awaiting the arrival of our food, the colorful ladies sitting next to us began singing in ecstasy a chorus of praises. It went something like this: four wows and an amazing. No make that five wows, and another and an OH MY GOD! Ok now six wows, another OH MY GOD, an out of this world and an incredible.  I had to look and see what they were eating.  Yep!!!! It was the braised bacon.  At this point I am salivating and can wait no longer and I don’t have to my plate has arrived.  If it tastes anything like it looks then I am in for a treat.  And low and behold it does.  I bite into the most succulent piece of meat I have EVER had in my life. I immediately close my eyes to savor this moment.  I begin a series of wows and OH MY GODS myself.  For once I am not even very interested in eating hubby’s food.  Though for the sake of the blog I do try his scallops, which are perfectly prepared.  I don’t eat red meat so I leave the ribs to him but I do try his mashed potatoes, which are so savory I nearly cry out!  We eat in silence with big smiles on our face and top it off with more sangria.  Overall the food was great, the vibe was sexy city yet not pretentious, and the sangria was great.  The service was nothing to write home about but it was good.

I am really happy we skipped out on Barcelona.

Estadio is definitely a “do” on my list.  www.estadio-dc.com
