Few things in this world are guaranteed. Three things that are guaranteed are death, taxes, and KramerBooks and Afterwords being open. Open like the arms of a waiting lover who never lets you down. I remember once during Snowmegeddon when EVERYONE was closed but I had out of town guests to entertain. I called KramerBooks and not only were they open, they cheered me on to walk the few blocks to their Dupont Circle storefront and participate in the big Citywide snow fight. Perfect. Always there for me. That was an extreme situation but the best thing about KramerBooks is that they keep the best regular hours as well. Open Sunday through Thursday from 7:30am – 1:00am and Friday and Saturday 7:30am-4:00am, it’s more supportive than your best friend who may not answer the phone if you call her after midnight. I love KramerBooks. It’s like a soft snuggly blanky. My comfort zone. So I’ve discussed the hours, now lets get to the meat of what makes this place extra great. Should I start with the food? The desserts? The books?
Like many restaurants KramerBooks and Afterwords regularly changes its menu but its the staples that made me a die hard fan anyway. The Butternut Squash Ravioli with goat cheese makes for a perfect dinner or lunch choice. Just the perfect serving size and flagrant mix of basil, parmesan, lemon and sundried tomatoes. Next up is the Smoked Cubano sandwich. It’s slow cooked for 2 days and served with gouda. Jeez Louise I am excited thinking about it. With a menu that boasts items such as Lobster & Corn w/Calamaretti Pasta, Kale and Quinoa Caesar Salad, and Chesapeake Stuffed Rock Shrimp, it’s hard to pick. But once you do it’s now time to order your dessert.
Red Velvet Cheesecake, Ricardo’s Apple Bread Pudding, Salted Vanilla Cake… the list goes on forever but I tend to stay with my tried and true Double Chocolate Cake.
I very rarely have to wait long for a table at KramerBooks but on the rare occasion that I do, it gives me time to peruse the expansive book selection. Currently, a favorite that I am reading is Bringing up Bebe. They have a great selection of books for the French Lovers which suits me just fine.
P.S. They also make very generous drinks there. I once had a magical Long Island Iced Tea. It was better than Dorothy’s red slippers. I blinked and I woke up at home!
You just can’t go wrong with KramerBooks and Afterwords and that’s fine by me.
